How long do solid timber doors last?

In terms of longevity, solid timber is difficult to beat and is able to last in excess of 60 years. It goes without saying that some TLC will be required in order for the door to last this long. However, provided you don’t mind repainting the door every half a dozen years or so, solid timber doors can be an excellent, long-term investment.

How energy efficient is a solid wood door?

Solid timber is an excellent insulator of heat. Our timber entrance doors, for example, are able to achieve U-values of 1 W/m²k. The better insulated your home is, the less you will have to spend on heating bills. Therefore, a solid timber door will save you plenty on heating costs. This is especially true if you’re replacing a door that is pretty old.

What types of wood are timber doors made from?

One aspect of solid wood doors that is often overlooked is their versatility. Whereas a uPVC door will be built from uPVC and an aluminium door from – you guessed it – aluminium, solid timber doors are available in a variety of different softwoods and hardwoods.

Hardwoods are well known for having an attractive grain texture that looks highly appealing in a light stain finish. Softwoods, on the other hand, tend to feature modern finger joints which look great when painted. The different species of wood also differ enormously in terms of finish, so you can achieve a number of different looks. European Oak, for example, is a vivid golden honey colour.

Species of wood available with our solid timber doors:

  • Engineered Redwood (modified softwood)

  • Grandis Hardwood

  • European Oak (hardwood)

  • Accoya (modified softwood)

Are solid wood doors secure?

You can’t put a price on peace of mind and, therefore, keeping you and your family safe is an essential characteristic of any door. Fortunately, solid timber doors do not fall short in this aspect. When opting for a timber door from T&K, regardless of whether you’re after a Frenchbifoldsliding or residential timber door, they’re fitted with multi-point locking systems and advanced cylinder locks as standard. Therefore, you can always feel secure in your own home.

How much do timber doors cost?

As mentioned above, timber doors are likely to cost more than the uPVC equivalent. However, they offer incredible long-term value. They also have no set cost, but their price is affected by a number of factors such as the style of door, their colour and the glazing they’re fitted with. Do timber doors warp?

As time goes on, a timber door will endure extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, along with a variety of testing weather conditions. This can cause them to warp out of shape. When warped out of shape, they don’t insulate the home as well and they are less secure. However, our timber doors possess excellent dimensional stability, resistance to warping and they are fitted with high-performance gaskets. This ensures they will keep their shape and secure your home from intruders and the weather for a long time to come.

For their durability alone, solid wood doors are a shrewd investment. Considering how secure, efficient and versatile they are too, however, it’s clear to see they are most definitely ‘worth it’.
