Home security is a must for nearly every homeowner. You do not have to spend a lot of money making your home safe. Some of the best ideas are simple DIY ideas invented by homeowners. Reducing the number of break-ins in your neighborhood can actually improve your home's worth, because nobody wants to live in an area where there is a high amount of crime.

Insurance

Use a video camera to inventory everything in your home. Many smartphones have video cameras that produce adequate videos. Walk slowly around your home and record furniture, jewelry, and electronics. Make sure to record the serial numbers of each item. Save the video and make a backup in case your insurance adjuster asks for proof that you owned certain items.

Doors

Set up a "barking dog monitor." Set up the alarm next to your front or back door by securing it to the wall with screws. Turn it on and program it according to the instructions. When someone comes within a certain distance to your door, the alarm will sound like a vicious dog barking to ward off burglars. Install double-cylinder locks on your doors. These are more secure than simple deadbolts.

Windows

Windows are common entryways that burglars use to get into your home. Install window locks on every window and sliding glass door and place vibration alarms on the glass. These measures prevent thieves from pulling or sliding open the windows or doors. If they break or knock against a window, the alarm will sound.

Outside

Thieves have an easier time breaking into homes that have a lot of hiding places outside. Keep shrubbery around your home to a minimum to prevent thieves from hiding in the bushes. Install a motion detector floodlight near your front door to illuminate anyone coming up your driveway at night. This might scare off people looking to break into your home at night.

Surveillance

One inexpensive method of room surveillance is to utilize the tools on your laptop or PC. This is a good method if you are leaving for the day or weekend and want to make sure your roommate isn't stealing things from you. Download and install home surveillance software such as Webcam Watchdog, EvoCam, or HomeCamera. Set up the laptop to face the room you want to view. Secure your laptop to an object with a laptop lock to prevent others from stealing it. Set the program to run continuously or only when someone walks by. You can view the recording later on.
